Chester Eastside
Ministries' Mission is to bring urban and suburban people together
in worship and service. Our goal is to render services to those individuals
in need of food, clothing, spiritual guidance, and educational and recreational
opportunities so they may meet the challenges of life. It is also our
aim to convey respect for human dignity and to offer people the opportunity
to realize their potential by cultivating their inner strengths, so
that they may, in turn, help others to expand their horizons.
In 2004,
CEM provided 50,000 meals, supplied clothing to 4,700 people, and provided
10,000 hours of after school, summer camp, and cultural arts programs.
Emergency aid and referrals to other services are provided to over 350
people each year. CEM is a major faith-based community partner for at
risk families, children, and adults of Chester.
CEM’s
Services/Program:
The
Food and Clothing Ministry provides emergency food and clothing.
The program is the largest center of the Interfaith Coalition of Food
Centers of Delaware County.
CEM
Library is the only library on the eastside of Chester City.
The library serves residents of all ages. After school homework supervision,
a computer lab, tutoring, and adult GED classes are available.
The
Saturday Cultural Arts Program includes children ages 8 –12.
The six-month program is committed to supporting physical, emotional,
and spiritual growth for its participants. The goal of the program is
to help develop an appreciation for the diversity of art and to help
the children become aware of the significance and history of their own
unique heritage. Music, drumming, dance, drama, painting, photography,
and crafts are used to meet this goal.

The After School
Program provides elementary school children with homework tutoring,
reading skills diagnosis, and a healthy snack in a friendly and stimulating
environment. With a part-time staff of four and over 30 volunteers from
area schools, colleges and churches, we are able to offer children one
on one homework help and individual attention. Additional features of
the program include music, crafts, computer skills development, and
woodworking. The program is free to all students in grades 1–
6, and runs from 3:30 – 5:30pm, Monday through Thursday during
the school year.
The
Summer Day Camp provides a quality educational experience for
50 children from 6 – 12 years old. The focus of the camp is to
strengthen reading and math skills and promote library and computer
skills development. The program also provides a diversified cultural
enrichment experience, including arts and crafts, performing arts, and
exposure to new experiences through field trips and other activities.
Swimming and other recreational activities are also included.
